Message from the Owner
Since our founding in 1902,
Kitazawa Bookstore has been supported by generations of researchers, scholars, and book lovers.
I grew up surrounded by this bookstore and its books, and now have the privilege of carrying on its legacy as the fourth-generation owner. What once felt like an ordinary part of my childhood has become, to me, a place of lasting cultural value that has quietly supported the intellectual pursuits of countless people.
Books have been a constant companion throughout my life. They have encouraged me, comforted me, and, at times, helped me through life’s most difficult moments.
Looking back, I realize that it was not only books, but also the people of Jimbocho and the many customers who have supported Kitazawa Bookstore over the years, who shaped the person I am today. As I carry forward the values entrusted to me by previous generations, I remain committed to honoring the relationships we have built with our customers and the traditions our family has cherished.
Every day, I have the privilege of meeting people from many walks of life: those delighted to discover a long-sought book,
those entrusting us with books they have treasured, and students encountering rare or foreign-language books for the first time. Each of these moments reminds me why this work is so meaningful.
To inherit a long history is not simply to preserve the past. It is also to ensure that Kitazawa Bookstore remains a welcoming place for those who are just beginning to discover the joy of books, as well as for those who continue to pursue knowledge throughout their lives.
Here in Jimbocho, the town of books, I look forward to welcoming you and helping you discover the book that will become part of your own story.

1902年の創業以来、北澤書店は多くの研究者や愛書家の皆さまに支えられながら歩んでまいりました。私自身も、この店と本に囲まれて育ち、四代目として店を受け継ぐことになりました。幼い頃には当たり前だった風景も、今ではかけがえのない文化であり、多くの方の知的な営みを支えてきた場所なのだと実感しています。
私は子どもの頃から本を読み、励まされ、ときに救われながら今日まで歩んできました。本とこの街、そして長く北澤書店を支えてくださったお客様との出会いが、今の私を育ててくれたのだと思っています。
先代から受け継いだ信念と、家族とともに守ってきた時間を大切にしながら、これからの北澤書店の役目を担ってまいります。
店頭では、探し求めていた一冊に出会って笑顔になる方、本との別れを託してくださる方、初めて洋書を手に取る学生の方など、さまざまなお客様と出会います。その一つひとつの時間が、この仕事の大きな喜びです。
歴史を受け継ぐことは、過去を守ることだけではありません。
これから本を好きになる人や、学びを深めようとする人にとっても、北澤書店が身近な存在であり続けたいと考えています。
